His early works, set in the fictitious Tilbury Town, expressed the poet’s vision of the American Dream gone awry. In how he went and what he said: 'There are no millers any more,' Was all that she had heard him say And he had lingered at the door. Themes seen through this poem are: life is too short, enjoy things while you can, never take anything for granted, and be happy with what you have. The millers wife had waited long, The tea was cold, the fire was dead And there might yet be nothing wrong. Edwin Arlington Robinson has wrote many plays and short stories in his life. Professor Lawrence Thompson of Princeton University gathered sixty-three of these poems in the collection Tilbury Town. Even if the name of the town is not mentioned explicitly (as in " Richard Cory," " Miniver Cheevy," and "Cliff Klingenhagen," among others), the regional values of Tilbury Town are still evoked. Robinson's Tilbury Town cycle explores the issues of small-town New England: a repressive and utilitarian atmosphere influenced by Puritanism. ![]() ![]() Despite his popularity at the time, however, today Robinson is generally remembered for only a handful of poems.ĭrawing heavily upon the town of Gardiner, Maine where he grew up, Robinson often depicted a fictional setting called Tilbury. Robinson won the Pulitzer Prize three times: in 1922 for Collected Poems, in 1924 for The Man Who Died Twice, and in 1927 for Tristram. Often using a dark sense of humor, he studied his fellow countrymen and portrayed them in satirical or philosophical ways in some of his best work. Robinson's use of everyday speech and commitment to traditional forms distinguished his poetry from others of his time. The philosophy of the poem, that faith and creative love will someday save the world, is a lustrous background for the story: 'The torch of woman, who, together with the light. Within the context of the poem, however, Corys appearance also symbolizes. In Merlin, Robinson revivifies, not the age of chivalry, but our own time, our own double world of hope and of reality, with its loves, faith, fears, wars and failures. First, Corys clean-cut and gentlemanly exterior symbolizes, for the townspeople, his elite status and his comfortable and pleasant life. Edwin Arlington Robinson was a prolific early twentieth-century American poet whose work addresses themes of personal failure, the human condition, and what lies behind the social mask.
